How to Perform Self-Abhyanga Using an Ayurvedic Body Oil

In this video, I am going to be showing you how to perform Self-Abhyanga using the Five Prana Ayurvedic Body Oil. Abhyanga is an ancient practice that is believed to predate the Vedic period. It means “loving hands” and it involves applying generous amounts of dosha-specific herbal oils to the skin. Abhyanga oil is very revered in Ayurveda. In fact the Sanskrit word for "oil" sneha, is also the same word for "love." So when we practice Abhyanga, using our Ayurvedic massage oil, we are practicing a treatment of love.

To practice Self-Abhyanga, begin by focusing on the affirmation, “I am worth the time this takes.” Abhyanga is best practiced after you bathe, when the skin is still slightly damp. When you practice self-abhyanga make sure to do so on a good bath mat so you don’t slip. Begin by heating the bottle of oil in warm water until the oil is warm to the touch. Then place a small amount of oil in the palm of your hand. Apply the oil to the body in long, straight strokes on the long bones and circular strokes at the joints. Remember to go in clockwise circular directions and down the front of the long bones and up the back. Make sure to give attention to every part of the body. When you get to the torso, massage the belly using circular clockwise strokes, keeping with the direction of the colon. Go up on the right side of your torso, over the top and down the left and over the bottom to the starting point and continue. You should end with clockwise circular strokes over the heart space. Make sure to apply as much oil as your skin is thirsty for.
