Elements: air & ether (space)
Taste: sweet, salty & sour
Qualities: dry, light, cold, rough, subtle, mobile, clear
Locations: colon, pelvis, thighs, ears, bones, skin, head, throat, and diaphragm
Functions: all physical movement; movement of thoughts, feelings and nerve impulses; communication; respiration; heart function; peristalsis; elimination; hearing; touch; clarity; creativity; enthusiasm
Causes for Provocation: over eating; staying up late at night; talking too much; excessive physical work or exercise; eating too much pungent, bitter, astringent foods; worrying and excess thinking; frequent fasting; eating cold foods; fall/autumn season; suppression of natural urges
Vata Dosha Diet
Because Ayurveda treats the whole person and no two people are alike, there isn’t a set prescribed diet for all Vata dosha people to follow. There are however, some generalized recommendations for Vata predominate people.
Emphasize the tastes of sweet, sour and salty
Eat warming foods like soups and stews
Drink warm herbal tea and warmed spiced milk
Drink room temperature or warm water, no cold water
Avoid raw and light foods like salads and raw vegetables
Avoid dry and airy foods like chips, crackers and beans
Avoid mobile foods like caffeinated drinks especially coffee
Avoid cold foods like frozen foods, iced drinks and foods,
Favor root vegetables like sweet potatoes, carrots, turnips, parsnips, beets and winter squashes
Use ginger regularly, chew a small piece of ginger seasoned with a little salt, black pepper and lemon before each meal
Favor grains like basmati rice, cooked oats, quinoa, and wheat (if tolerated)
Favor moist and cooked foods like soups and stews
Keep a regular routine around mealtimes
Eat in a calm environment where you feel safe and comfortable
Eat a warming breakfast like oatmeal, cooked quinoa or breakfast rice puddings
Eat sitting down and never while on-the-go
Pay attention to how your body reacts to nightshades (potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant and peppers)
