Dinacharya Series: How to Practice Tongue Scraping

In this video, I am going to be showing you how to perform the Dinacharya practice of Tongue Scraping. According to Ayurveda, the tongue is a map of our organs. It is also a pathway for detoxification. The Dinacharya practice of Tongue Scraping is used to remove Ama or toxins from the mouth and tongue. During sleep, our body detoxifies and these toxins or ama end up on the tongue. When we awake and scrape those toxins off the tongue, we clean the mouth and remove those toxins. According to Ayurveda, Tongue Scraping can be used to decrease bad breath and infections, increase your sense of taste, activate your digestion, and decrease plaque and oral debris. To practice Tongue Scraping, begin by using a stainless steel tongue scraper. Start as far back on the tongue as you can and scrape the gunk forward and off the tongue. Rinse the tongue scraper and begin again. 5-10 scrapes is usually plenty. When you first start tongue scraping, you may notice that you can’t go that far back on the tongue. Don’t worry, as you get more comfortable with tongue scraping, you will find you can reach farther back. Now press play on the video and follow along as you are led through the Ayurvedic Dinacharya practice of Tongue Scraping.
