Ayurveda Meditation

Meditation is very beneficial for not only the mind, but also the body. In Ayurveda we call it Dhyana Chikitsa or meditation as therapy because meditation has the power to heal us in many ways and on many levels. It calms and relaxes. It centers us. It allows us to decompress and connect to a higher state of consciousness.

Developing a meditation practice can be difficult. But as Maya Tiwari says in her book “The Path of Practice: A Woman’s Book of Ayurvedic Healing”: “It may be hard at first to honor your promise, but soon enough you’ll experience some results, and that will reinforce your commitment.”

Pranava Upasana Meditation

In this Ayurveda meditation audio recording, you will be led through a 10 minute OM Chanting Meditation practice which is one of the lesser known meditation practices in Ayurveda. This is not only a meditation practice but also a mantra practice. Patanjali in his yoga sutras wrote, “through absorption and concentration, the processes of meditation, we may go beyond sensory perceptions.” When we practice Pranava Upasana Meditation we utilize sound, breath and awareness by deeply inhaling and upon exhaling, reciting the sacred mantra OM.

The mantra OM is the most divine of all words and is the most important mantra. It supplies energy to all things and all actions. Therefore it is the beginning and the end. It is the seed of all other mantras as well. In our So Hum Meditation, the mantra So is the feminine form of OM. While the mantra Hum is the masculine form of OM. When we say the mantra OM, we are connecting with our truest self which opens us up to the positive energy and forces of the universe.

Practicing a mantra meditation like OM Chanting Meditation, can be very transformative and can help to propel us forward in our meditation practice. Just sitting down and trying to clear the mind is not attainable for most people. Our minds are filled with thoughts that are racing by. This makes meditation frustrating for many because they feel like they aren’t doing it right. Mantras are the way to prepare the mind for meditation. They focus the mind on the words and sounds of the mantra rather than your fleeting thoughts. Some people like to use mala beads or rosary beads to practice mantra meditation. Mala beads have 108 beads on them. This can help you to set a specific number of recitations during your meditation. And with time and practice, additional rounds of 108 recitations can be added. Now follow along as you are led through the Ayurvedic meditation technique of OM Chanting Meditation.
