Dhyani Mudra

Dhyani Mudra

Dhyani Mudra is the mudra or gesture of contemplation and meditation. The left hand lies in the right hand and the thumbs touch. Just like our feet are a map of our internal and external body in reflexology, our hands are also a map of the body. The thumb is the reflex area of the pineal gland. Philosopher Rene Descartes believed that the pineal gland was the "principal seat of the soul" and viewed it as the third eye or the point of connection between the intellect and the body. I feel that mind body connection when I practice this mudra.

When you practice this mudra, your hands form a bowl shape. This bowl is empty, filled with the element of space or ether. There is a classic Ayurvedic meditation practice called “empty bowl meditation” that can utilize this mudra to enhance that feeling of space. This void offers the opportunity to be filled with love, light, peace and positivity. It can also urge us to feel forgiveness towards ourselves, others and all beings.

Thy will be done.
— Affirmation from Gertrud Hirschi's "Mudras: Yoga in your Hands"

QOTD: "what do you want to cleanse your mental and physical self of and what do you want to invite to fill that space instead?" I want to cleanse myself of repression. I feel for a good portion of my life, I've suppressed emotions. I keep things to myself and let things fester inside me. I was afraid to speak my truth. It felt too vulnerable or like I was revealing that someone had the power to affect me. I bit my tongue, swallowed back tears and pushed down my feelings. I did this out of fear. I thought if people knew they could get to me, they would use it against me somehow. It saddens me that I was so naturally suspicious of others. Recently I've been working on facing my fears. I try to be more open and less afraid. I falter and fall back into bad habits, but I dust myself off and try again. I try to remind myself that I will encounter detractors along the way. I have to remember that I DON'T have any control over how someone else acts, but I DO have control over how I react to it.
