Ayurvedic Skin Care

Our skin is our largest organ. It is also a digestive organ. Because of this, it is important to be as mindful about what you put on your skin as you are with what you put in your mouth. Use organic products whenever possible and look for skin care that is all-natural and made with ingredients you know and can pronounce.

Avoid Skin Care Chemicals

Below is a list of chemicals found on cosmetic and skin care products that you should try to avoid:

  • FD&C colors, D&C colors, HC colors (peroxide dyes): potential carcinogens

  • Fragrances: this means they are synthetic fragrances, look for products that say essential oils instead

  • NDELA (nitrosodiethanolamine), TEA, DEA, MEA, sodium lauryl sulfate: on FDA list of suspected carcinogens

  • Paraffin, mineral oil: on FDA list of suspected carcinogens, interferes with vitamin absorption in the body

  • Phenols: on FDA list of suspected carcinogens, may cause peeling, swelling, hives, and burning

  • PEG-8 (polyetheylene glycol): on FDA list of suspected carcinogens

Natural glycols are typically labeled natural glycerin or vegetable glycerin; unspecified glycols are listed as glycerol or glycerin and petrochemicals are listed as glycol, glyceryl, ethylene glycol, PEG or polyethelene glycol and propylene glycol

  • Polysorbate 80: is a known carcinogen

  • Parabens (methyl, propyl, butyl, quaternium-15, imidazolidinyl): are preservatives that are potential allergens

  • BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole), BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene), tocopherol (vitamin E): BHT is a suspected carcinogen, BHA may cause metabolic stress, damage to liver, baldness and fetal abnormalities

  • Alcohol, formaldehyde, propyl alcohol, toluene 2, 4 diamine, EDTA (ethylenediamine tetra acetic acid): suspected carcinogens. EDTA may cause numbness, tingling in fingers, lightheadedness, dizziness, vertigo, sneezing, nasal congestion, headache, and skin irritation.
