Abhyanga - The Ayurvedic Massage

Abhyanga is the the act of love we show ourselves through the sense of touch and the application of nourishing oils. Abhyanga is pronounced as “ah-bih-yahn-gah”. In Ayurveda it is considered a form of oleation therapy. It is often an integral part of Panchakarma, the ultimate shodana chikitsa or purification therapy. Abhyanga brings equilibrium and balance to the dosha by using dosha-pacifying oils, touch, strokes, and manipulation of marma points.

Abhyanga & the Senses

Your Abhyanga experience should stimulate each of your five senses with teas, oils, aromas, music and lighting all chosen based on your dosha or unique constitution.

  • Smell: your Ayurvedic massage oil should contain carefully chosen essential oils to pacify your dosha and doshic imbalances

  • Taste: you should enjoy dosha-appropriate tea before and after your Abhyanga session

  • Sight: you should set a mood in your Abhygana environment with lighting and colors chosen to soothe your dosha

  • Sound: you should play dosha-appropriate music and chanting healing mantras during your Abhyanga session

  • Touch: you should use a dosha-appropriate Ayurvedic massage oil as well as dosha-appropriate pressure and strokes

“The body of one who uses oil massage regularly does not become affected much even if subjected to accidental injuries, or strenuous work. By using oil massage daily, a person is endowed with pleasant touch, trimmed body parts and becomes strong, charming and least affected by old age.” - Charaka Samhita Vol. 1, V: 88-89
